A Chieftains Journey was an exercise in designing a new game, based off an existing IP. Our chosen IP was How To Train Your Dragon, and we designed a village management and exploration game.
You and your crew are stranded on a new, uncharted, island. You are appointed the chieftain, and now must direct your fellow Vikings to build and maintain a new village. You must decide whether you will be Dragon Slayers, Riders, or maintain a somewhat neutral relationship. Your choices will lead you towards a unique ending with each playthrough, encountering different obstacles and enemies with each playthrough!
This project was entirely theoretical, however all mechanics were completely planned out. We had tables and charts for different currency/resource weightings, diagrams and written out enemies, abilities, and endings for each path/alignment, etc.
My contribution was mainly in a Game Design capacity. I designed the different types of buildings, resources, and characters. This involved charting out what types of resources or currency the player would have at different points of the game, and designing what would be unlocked and how depending on that.
I also organised and ran meetings, delegated tasks, and made sure we hit our deadlines with completed and polished work.
